I am absolutely delighted and honoured to be your Captain for 2019. I completely understand how important the role is for Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and I will carry out the role to the best of my ability. Every time I walk past the Captains board by the stairs on the way in I have to pinch myself to see my name up there with all those that have been honoured to wear the jacket I am now wearing.
I would like to sincerely thank Derry McCarthy who asked me to be his Vice-Captain this year. Derry has been a fantastic Captain over the last 12 months and has worked tirelessly on behalf of the members in his role. I know he was very proud to be captain during the 125th anniversary year of our club.
Derry has achieved a lot as Captain – 2 shot reduction in his handicap, a first for many captains over the years and it’s something he reminds us pretty regularly – it usually goes the other way, of course that Hole In One in Southerndown Golf Club in Wales in August when we travelled over, I’m sure it’s something you will remember for years to come. Thanks for everything Derry. Thanks to Boys Captain Kieran O’Connor and Girls Captain Mairead Martin who were great ambassadors for the juniors in 2018. Well done on your year.
I would like to thank past captains who I have worked with, Declan McCarthy Captain 2017 and Liam Hartnett Captain 2016, I have learned a lot over the years since joining the committee in Liam’s year as handicap secretary (talk about going into the deep end in year 1) but I might be the only person to say I enjoyed my role as handicap secretary and of course as Honorary secretary last year for Declan.
Over the 3 years I have worked with Past President Arthur Hanley and President Jack Buckley and I would like to thank you all for the valuable information and knowledge you all shared with me.
I would like to thank the hard working committee over the years – The amount of work that goes into ensure everything runs smoothly is large, however there is a great team there to ensure it does. Our playing numbers have exploded over the past 3 years as you can see in the reports in front of you on page 17, which of course is a brilliant thing to be able to say, lots of clubs in the country are losing members but we are gaining and to be fair with the view and facility around its apparent to see why.
As you may know all the committee guys are volunteers and without this team we could not run the men’s club so successfully. We all have day jobs and we do our very best to get it right for the club. I really want to ensure there are no “them” and “us”, we are just a group of people willing to do their bit for the club. The competition door downstairs is always open!
I would like to welcome all new members and those who have returned back to Killarney to play and I look forward to meeting with you all over the next 12 months.
I’d like to welcome our new committee members to the “team”, Colm O’Shea/ John O’Mahony and Ger Moroney onto the committee for 2019. Colm is joining as treasurer for 2019 taking over from Harry O’Neill who has accepted the position of Vice-Captain for 2019.
Harry joined Killarney in 2000 and has served for 5 years on the committee and is very much a Killarney Golf and Fishing Club man, he has kept the reins with the cash over the years and I’m positively sure he will make a fantastic Captain in 2020.
John O’Mahony is taking over from John Curtin as junior officer and I would like to sincerely thank John for his many years of hard work for our juniors. I would also like to thank Tommy Galvin who is remaining as competition secretary and Donal (Gap) O’Sullivan as our handicap secretary, Mike Maher is taking over as PRO from Victor Mulcahy and I would like to thank Victor for his hard work over the last 5 years. I would like to thank Tomás Barry for accepting the position as Honorary Secretary and committee members Eddie O’Sullivan and Ian Cronin. Also stepping down is Declan McCarthy – I would like to personally thank you Declan for all your work over the many years and from all on committee, you will be missed. Of course Ex-Offio Derry, I will continue with those calls so you’re not finished just yet.
I would like to wish the very best to my fellow officers Lady Captain Mary Sheehy, current president Jack Buckley, incoming President Tom Prendergast, Incoming Junior girls Captain Valerie Clancy and Junior Captain Boys Ryan Kelliher all the very best in the year ahead. I’m sure we will all enjoy it and I am very much looking forward to working with you all. I would like to thank Lady Captain Sheila Crowley and congratulate her on a great year as Lady Captain.
I would like to thank the management council for working on all our behalf’s and I very much look forward to working with you on behalf of the Men’s Club members.
I have been a member of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club since I was 8 years old, I would like to thank my parents for encouraging me to take up and play golf, all the summer evenings going for a few holes will always be a memory with a smile. I really love this game and would also like to thank the entire junior officers over the many years, when I was a junior (not that long ago) and I must say a special thank you to Finian Forde and Eileen Whelan for all their work.
At the time as junior we didn’t realise but now I certainly do. I will always remember the hard work ye all did to keep us interested in the game and showing us the golf etiquette/ golf rules and how we should represent this fine club when travelling to events all over the county.
I am a member of this great club for 26 years and I genuinely believe we are one of the best clubs in the country. We have a fantastic course in a great location, a growing membership, excellent facilities, superb practice facilities and a great community who come together to play golf and socialise . I do think we can be guilty of getting caught up with the negatives instead of celebrating the positives, but a healthy golf club relies on a strong membership and I would like to think that we can ALL help the club by being positive ambassadors. The more we can all talk up the club, the more people we can attract, and in turn the busier this club can get and in turn improve our product year on year. It’s YOUR club, please be proud of it. It’s a great place to be when we’re all pulling in the same direction.
Enjoy your golf the rest of this season and I very much look forward to playing with as many of you as possible over the coming year.. Hopefully the weather will be kind over the Winter and the Summer next year as good as this year
Yours in golf

At a special reception in the club on Sunday evening (8th October), Mairead Martin was awarded Honorary Life Membership following her Senior Cap for Ireland this year when she played in the Home Internationals. The reception was attended by her family, President Breda Duggan, Lady Captain Amy, Captain Declan, Committee Members and Club Members. Mairead began playing golf at the young age of 11 in 2011, with a handicap of 36, and finished 2016 +1. She has played across Europe from the Czech Republic to Galway Bay, and from Norway to Ontario, Canada. Mairead has a brilliant playing record at national and international level, and at Club level she won her matches in the Senior Foursome Ladies All-Ireland winning team in 2014 and again with the Ladies Senior Cup All Ireland winning Team in 2017. Mairead played by invitation at the Duke of York Trophy in September 2017. She is currently playing of +2 and we wish her continued success in her golfing career.
The Ladies Branch is compiling a record of lady members who achieved a hole-in-one in any competition in Killarney Golf Club organised by the Ladies Branch prior to the year 2000.

The details listed above contain the names of lady members who achieved a “Hole in One” 2000-2015.
These are the details that will be displayed on a noticeboard. If you have not yet submitted your details to the Competitions Secretary Katie or Secretary Sheila please do so by the end of February 2016.
To all lady members, please support us in the smooth running of competitions by
(1) avoiding slow play – players should always keep up with the group ahead.
(2) observing the rule of golf 6.3 which relates to being ready to tee off at your booked tee time. Playing partners should proceed at the correct time even if one of the players is delayed. Failure to do so will result in a penalty for all three players infringing the rule (details of rule 6.3 are outlined on the ladies notice board).
Thank you for your participation and support of competitions.
Back in January 2008, Bernard Collins, Noreen Coffey and Noel P O’Sullivan got together and agreed it was high time that Killarney Golf Club had a Male Voice Choir it could be proud of !
Well known vocalists from within the Club were mustered together, and on a wet and windy night in
Feb 2008, after closing time , came together. Tenors, Baritones and Bases were quickly sorted, and it
wasn’t long before melodies and harmonies started to flow !
Weekly practices followed at the Malton Hotel and before long a level of competency was reached to enable
the Choir to give its first recital at the Club in mid May 2008. This first outing was a great success and
was followed by a further performance at the President’s Dinner at the Clubhouse.
Since 2008, the Choir has progressed significantly and performs two Concerts annually at the Church of Ireland.
The Choir also performs regularly at the Cathedral and Fossa Church and at the Annual Mass for deceased
Members at the Golf Club. Regular performances take place at Nursing Homes at Christmas time.
Other performances included World Mental Health Choir Day and Monsignor Flaherty Concert night.
It is the policy of the Choir to perform, whenever possible , for charitable and voluntary organisations.
The choir is now entering phase two of its development , and is actively recruiting new members .
If you are interested, feel free to contact either Bernard Collins ( 087 9872804 ) or Mike Leahy ( 087 9104546 )
or any member of the choir.
